The Ryan Holder State Closed Championships tennis tournament was held July 29th through August 2nd. This is the second-highest level USTA junior tennis tournament in the state of Kentucky. This year's tournament brought 256 competitors from across the state to Lexington to compete in five age divisions.
LCA freshman Lauren Waddles won five singles matches to bring home the championship trophy in the Girls 18's singles despite playing up two age divisions. Lauren has played the #1 singles position on the LCA girls tennis team since 7th grade and was also a finalist in the Girls 18s doubles.
These tournament wins helped Lauren climb to a current ranking of #54 in the Girls 14s division of the USTA Southern Section which includes nearly 1,500 girls across nine southern U.S. states. Several other LCA tennis players also competed in this tournament and represented LCA very well.
Ryan Holder was a Kentucky junior tennis star before tragically dying in an automobile accident in 1995 at the age of 16. The Kentucky State Closed Junior Tennis Tournament was renamed in memory of Ryan Holder shortly thereafter. The LCA tennis team has hosted this tournament for many years and this serves as a significant fundraiser for the LCA tennis program.
